Thomas Blakeley Mackenzie (1887-1944). Born in Bradford,Yorkshire.Studied at Bradford College of Art and afterwards on a scholarship at the Slade School of Fine Art.Worked as a painter, etcher and wood engraver and, rather spasmodically,as an illustrator during the 1920s.He moved to France in 1929 in the hope of establishing himself there as a painter, but soon returned to England, and during the 1930s produced topographical etchings of Oxford and hand-made jewellery. He died in Cornwall.
The British Library catalogues Mackenzie as two separate artists: T.B. and Thomas Mackenzie, and this perhaps reflects the fact that,in illustration at least,he never developed a consistent style. His published work falls into three distinct groups: smoothly executed, naturalistic drypoints; full colour plates with echoes of,among others,Edmund Dulac, the Fauves, oriental art, mediaeval manuscripts and b/w illustrations (wood engravings, and pen and ink drawings) that were the most spontaneous among his productions.Despite his lack of consistency,or perhaps because of his continuing search for a personal language,he produced some interesting illustrative work.
